Part Six: Relieving Another’s Pain

But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. (Psalm 86:15 NLT)

God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much... (Ephesians 2:4 NLT)

Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money. Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened. He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them. (Acts 3:1-8 NLT)

Mercy is when _____________________________ touches _______________________________.

Mercy is not …

What mercy does …

“At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. (Matthew 18:26-27 NIV)

Mercy _______________________ over _________________________ (James 2:13 NIV)

How to show others I care:

1. Grow in ______________________________________

We urge you, our friends, to warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. (1 Thessalonians 5:14 GNT)

2. Extend _______________________________________

Remember the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” (Colossians 3:13 TLB)

And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others …(Jude 1:22-23 NLT)

3. Show __________________________________________

“If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that! But love your enemies, do good to them ... then your reward will be great ... Be merciful, just as your Father is!” (Luke 6:33, 3536 NIV)

4. Offer __________________________________________

“But if someone who is supposed to be a Christian has enough money to live well, and sees a brother in need but won’t help him ‑‑how can God’s love be in him? ... Let’s stop just saying we love people ... let’s show it by our actions!” (1 John 3:1718 TLB)

Be merciful to those who doubt.” (Jude 1:22 TLB)
